Native Plants in Container Gardens
Providing essential wildlife habitat doesn’t have to take acres— it can even be done in a small container garden! Many of our native plants will do well in a container given the right care. Some examples include:
Southern Nevada (Mojave Desert / USDA Zones 8–10)
Mojave Sage (Salvia mohavensis): Features pale blue to white flowers. It requires minimal water and loves blasting heat.
Desert Lavender (Hyptis emoryi): Highly aromatic gray-green foliage with small purple blooms.
Brittlebush (Encelia farinosa): A small, rounded shrub that produces striking yellow daisy-like flowers.
Northern/Central Nevada (Great Basin / USDA Zones 4–7)
Firecracker Penstemon (Penstemon eatonii): Produces stunning, tubular bright red blooms that hummingbirds love.
Rubber Rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa): Compact varieties offer beautiful golden-yellow fall blooms.
Wild Blue Flax (Linum lewisii): A delicate-looking but hardy plant with sky-blue flowers that sway beautifully on patios.
Desert Globemallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua): Famous for its vibrant orange cup-shaped flowers.
In our dry, hot and windy environment there are several factors to consider when setting up you container garden such as: pot size, potting medium, location and of course suitable plants. Luckily there are several guides to help you get started like these two.
